The “Two-Do” List: Democratic Voters Listen Up

by ©️Leslye Joy Allen

Here’s TWO things that we, on the Left and in the Democratic Party, need to do right now and on a regular basis.

1. If we dislike what Felon 47 is doing and are disappointed with how Democrats (and Republicans) in the House and the Senate are responding to his threats and orders, WE need to call our representatives’ offices every single day. Leave messages. Speak with their assistants. Learn their assistants’ names. Be courteous, but express your anger and frustration.

Whether your representatives were in office or not when George W. Bush was president, remind them that Congress abdicated their duty when they handed Bush the right to declare war on Iraq. Congress is supposed to decide whether we go to war, not the president. Remind them that they are again abdicating their duties under Felon 47’s administration.

Make sure your representatives voice mailboxes and emails are full of your messages of disappointment. Promise not to vote for them. Promise to start looking for alternative candidates to run in their place. They had no damned problem begging Joe Biden to step aside and not run for president, so they should be prepared to do the same.

I have done this before. I delivered angry messages once a day for 3 solid weeks. I also left messages on the weekends.

Finally, one of my representatives called me back and I held him on the phone for 2 & ½ hours.

Remember, your representatives are required by law to respond in writing to their constituents who have contacted them. Back in the day you received letters by snail mail. Today, you typically receive an email. Print and save all correspondence from your representatives. I still have a file folder that is over an inch thick filled with letters from Senators and Congresspersons.

2. Read the U.S. Constitution. If you don’t want to read the whole thing, then go to Google and type your questions about the constitution in the search bar and see what comes up. Ask questions like: “What are the limits of a president’s powers?” “What are the responsibilities of Congress?” These kinds of questions (and please create your own) will pull up long and short articles. Read as many as you can and compare them.

You need a clear understanding of presidential and congressional powers because when you call your representatives and leave a message or speak to an assistant, you want to be able to tell them if you think they are (or are not) doing their job based on the duties assigned to them by our Constitution. It also would not hurt to Google the legislation your representatives have voted for and against.

The key is to be informed to the point where they know they are not responding to a member of the misinformed. Remind them that the phrase “We the People” means just that.
